What is trivalent chrome plating?

Trivalent chrome plating, also known as tri-chrome, Cr3+, or chrome(III) plating, is a decorative form of chrome plating that applies a lustrous finish to metal components. Trivalent is considered much more environmentally friendly and safer to use and operate than hexavalent chrome plating because it’s less toxic and can be diluted and removed from waste streams. With far less metal concentrations and chemicals required for processing, the effluent is more easily treated for disposal.
